If you’re not an Evangelion fan, it’s quite simple- this series definitely isn’t for you. It relies on comprehensive knowledge of the anime, a bit of the rebuild films and expects you to be intimately familiar with the characters and story from the start. It’s going to be incomprehensible to anyone who isn’t familiar with Evangelion.If you are hardcore Eva fan, you probably should read these books as they’re likely the closest we’ll ever get to a second season. It also has probably the best ending, as while I’m a big fan of Evangelion, I haven’t liked any of the endings (including 3.0+1.0 based on the spoilers).My main criticism of this series is how confusing I found the writing. It often shifts perspective to another character without any kind of paragraph space or prose to indicate this, and there’s often no indication of who is speaking, maybe it’s easier to tell in the original Japanese?Things also often seem to happen with very little description or explanation leaving the reader unsure what exactly happened, who did it, or why. The second book was definitely the most coherently written, the rest are often very confusing. I’m not sure if this is a problem with the original Japanese source or the translation.My main criticism of this entry is that it’s mostly one long drawn out battle and when it ends, there’s almost no wrap up and no chance for characters to react to the things that happened. It definitely leaves all the characters in a much better place than any previous Eva ending, but I’d like to have read more of what happened afterwards.I would definitely like to see this adapted into a Manga or anime, as I think that would help clear up any confusing writing with additional visual elements.My review probably seems pretty negative, but if you’re an Eva fan, I think you should read this.
