Before reading this book, I had just finished a biography of lincoln, "The Lincolns: A Portrait of a Marriage," an excellent book and good review of Lincoln's life and philosophy. I have studied Lincoln' s life and writings for many years. This book, "Lincoln on Leadership..." I happened onto recently in an airport bookshop; with time on my hands, I purchased it. I couldn't put it down. The book's organization, though loosely chronological, centers on Lincoln's handling of such issues as economy, taxation, abolition, the Supreme Court, secession, political controversies , to name just a few. What comes through in each section is the HUMANITY of the man in his leadership of a war-torn nation. However, the author then relates each act of Lincoln to current issues of our time. It's a "WWLD" approach: Mr. Phillips, without naming the current president in 2 018, contrasts the leadership abilities of both men to show the alarming direction our country is being taken today. My lasting impression is this: we need statesmen or women whose ambitions are not for their own gain but for the security of our country. Mr. Phillips acknowledges the damages of current leadership in D.C. and recommends the abolishment of Citizens United as a first step toward reclaiming our country from the hands of corporations.Personally, I am left with a feeling of hopelessness. Where is such a leader as Abraham Lincoln today?
